Summer 2013
Social and Artistic Representations of Youth Unemployment in the Eurozone
Study abroad has been one of the best experiences of my time at UW (so far). The time in Germany and Spain fulfilled my expectations, and then exceeded them in ways I couldn't have predicted. The topic of the program, youth unemployment in the Eurozone, is not directly connected to my studies in engineering. However, I focused on comparing the education systems in the US, Germany, and Spain which I s something that interested me. Additionally, the various readings and lectures exposed topics that I would likely have never encountered in my regular coursework. For example, learning about a Turkish soccer club in Berlin and a foundation in Leon that helps prepare migrants for entering the workforce. I did not encounter any subjects that made me want to change my educational path, but I do feel as if I am more aware of the world we live in.
For five weeks, I was able to immerse myself into an entirely different life. Exploring new cities and bonding with an amazing group of new people taught me that I am capable of adjusting to a variety of lifestyles. I have become more outgoing and eager to find the unique opportunities wherever I am. I can honestly say that I will carry this experience with me in the future.
