This fall, I participated in a pilot program for Honors Alumni Mentoring. I decided to try it because I knew that finding a job was going to be one of my top priorities for the year and any insight I could glean would help. I was paired with Benjamin, a current graduate student in Mechanical Engineering. I attended the kickoff event (Global Challenges with Vicky Lawson), which was interesting on an academic level, but the conversation steered toward social challenges so it didn't particularly apply to my own educational path. As an engineering, my career certainly could pertain to global issues but I think it would more likely be issues like green energy or ethics of space exploration rather than race or religious conflicts.
I met with my mentor several times and we discussed our backgrounds and future plans. Since he only graduated with hi Bachelors' a few years ago and will be joining the family business, his own experiences with job hunting are limited. However, he still had some advice from his own observations about how his friends found jobs. We also reviewed my resume, and I took his advice to find a more visually appealing format while keeping the content as it was (you can check out this updated version by following the tab on the page header!). Overall, it was a good experience, and though I'm still in the process of finding my first job, I think I have all of the skills and preparation to land a great position.

Winter 2016
Biology is one of those subjects that never really captured my interest, but after hearing time and time again that the professor was great, I decided to give it a shot. After numerous in class discussions, readings, virtual labs, and papers, I think my option has changed a bit. I still have no interest in taking formal biology classes, but I am very glad I have the foundation to participate in discussions about scientific advancements and the ethics of both research and commercialization. While it's not a subject that I expect to come up in my daily life, I am confident that I have the skills to evaluate publications and draw my own conclusions across any contemporary issue.

ART 339 - Honors PhotographySpring 2016
I first wanted to take photography when I saw it offered during freshman year, but due to limited offerings and course conflicts, it didn't happen until my final quarter. This was the most creative class I've taken and although i initially was just looking to learn the technical aspects of using a DSLR, I developed my ability to create interesting projects as well. we had five major assignments which entailed everything from shooting only from a 10 foot circle, to building our own pinhole cameras and developing negatives in the dark room, to working with complete creative freedom. All images from my work during the quarter can be viewed on my Flickr page. |
